"Mad As A Hatter"Have you ever heard the phrase "mad as a hatter?" This expression has its origin in the felt hat making business of years gone by. At one time a solution known as "mercurous nitrate" (also called "nitrate of mercury") was used when a hatter was making felt hats. A hatter was not only exposed to the mercurous nitrate in solution form, he was also exposed to it in a vapor as the felt previously soaked in the solution was heated and steamed during the hat making process and vapors were released. After repeated, long-term exposure the hatter would accumulate high levels of mercury in his body which would have serious, detrimental effects on his nervous system. A "mad hatter" would frequently exhibit uncontrollable muscle twitching, a lurching gait, and difficulty in thinking and speaking.
