About Skid Boots

This is the fetlock joint, the area protected by skid boots

Skid boots are protective boots put on the legs of a horse to protect the back of the fetlock joint during such activities as barrel racing, reining, etc. They are designed to prevent a horse from feeling a burning sensation when the horse drives its legs into the ground, like during tight, hard, turns or during a deep or hard stop.

At right, the blue arrow is pointing to the fetlock joint on the rear legs of a horse. A skid boot, if it is combined with other types of boots ("combo" boots), may be designed to also protect a larger area.
